The Hatchery is an international cleantech incubator focused on solving the world’s biggest challenges by supporting startups with: Outsourced business expertise, milestone based funding, and global reach in an established network – in exchange for equity over time.
As the head of the SA operations, and a Hatchery shareholder, Chwayita Nqiwa-Twalo leads the local strategy and operations. This includes building up the SA operations team, establishing its network of in-house business experts, liaising with their Hatcheries in Oslo and Detroit, evaluating future funders, and looking for startups that fit our ecosystem.
Please tell us a little more about yourself and your journey thus far.
I am a daughter, sister, wife and mother to two incredible daughters. What I have always understood about my life’s purpose from a very young age – is that I want to be in business. I have always worked towards achieving my goal of becoming an entrepreneur, and the past 10 years have been a challenging yet an honestly fulfilling journey.
Please tell us a little more about how your company came about.
I have spent 10 years working with local and international Tech Startup Businesses, Angel Investors, and Venture Capitalists. My passion about innovation and how it can help slow down the process of climate change is why I was interested in establishing the Hatchery in Africa.
Should you be busy with any interesting initiatives, please tell us a little more about it.
In February we launched Hatchery Detroit and in the 1st week of May I will be in Barcelona, Spain launching our next office. It truly is an exciting time where we are really growing, and I do love working with a talented team that has a global plan in mind and we are fearlessly executing it.

What advice would you give a woman wanting to follow her dreams?
Please do the world a favour and follow those dreams – anything is possible and working consistently on your goals leads to growth and success. Never underestimate the power of your network, when they say your network is your net worth – it’s true!
Who or what is your inspiration and why?
I am inspired to supersede any dreams or plans I have, I am generally a very self motivated person. That motivation comes from my mother, she was very intentional in ensuring that we are self motivated as her children.

Stay true to your purpose, continue to trust that small still voice – you will be blown away by where it will take you in life.

What are your top 3 business tips?
Do you have any tips for women that are holding down a day job and trying to start a new business?
Save every cent you can – because running out of savings is not cute. It takes time to get to a stage of profit or breaking even, therefore save as much as you can prior to leaving the ‘comfort’ of a monthly salary. Be consistent and intentional with your goals, just never stop moving forward!

Honesty, consistency and definitely perseverance. These 3 things have really shaped my life in a manner that has worked out in the most positive way.
