Born and raised in Durban. I went to a local Durban North school and studied a BCom at Varsity College. I went on to study a post grad in Foundation phase Education, but halfway through my post grad studies, I decided I wanted some experience in the working world. At the age of 23, I applied for my first real job at a listed corporate, in the financial services industry, starting out as a receptionist. After 18 months, I moved into a banking role and spent 8 years working with high-net-worth clients. I have had the privilege of working with some very successful and influential businesspeople.

Please tell us a little more about yourself and your journey thus far.

On a personal note, I’m a wife, mother to two gorgeous children and two fur babies, a nature and outdoor enthusiast, I enjoy all things health and wellness, running is my hobby and my escape to clear my head.

After having my second child at the end of 2021, I decided it was time for a change so after 10 years in the financial services industry, I resigned. It was a huge decision for me (and for our family), taking a big step into the unknown. My husband is self-employed, and we had always chatted about one day owning a lifestyle brand, which had a positive impact on the environment and with international potential. It just so happened that at around the same time, we stumbled upon Africa Organics. We are both passionate about conscious consumerism and have vowed to make our passion our work and lifestyle. Our journey on this path has begun very recently through our acquisition of Africa Organics, an international personal care brand that is natural, certified organic, earth-friendly as well as plastic and carbon neutral.

I am currently navigating new territory, being my own boss…

Please tell us a little more about how your company came about.

Africa Organics was developed in 2011. Southern Africa is home to a quarter of the world’s plant species and is one of the four biodiversity hotspots of the world. Our range is based on wild-harvested African plants.

Wild-harvested ingredients have the added benefit of being free from harmful agricultural chemicals and tend to contain higher levels of active compounds. Our goal is to share the benefits of Africa’s rich biodiversity with the rest of the world.

Should you be busy with any interesting initiatives, please tell us a little more about it.

Our goal is to increase our product offering by launching exciting new formulations within the personal care category, and to increase brand awareness on an international level. Our first step in achieving this is to raise consumer awareness about the benefits of using natural and organic products that are not only microbiome friendly, but that are also developed with sustainability at the core.

What is it that you are passionate about?

Our ultimate goal is to build a lifestyle brand (a household name) that can one day become a family run business, on an international scale. A brand that aligns with our values and the call to make a difference.

As individuals, we are passionate about doing more to save the environment and over time (and especially since becoming parents) we have become more conscious consumers. As humans, we have a moral obligation to preserve nature and its features. The Earth can only continue to sustain us if we protect its biodiversity.

Who or What has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

My mom, she was always my role model growing up. She is someone who I can always confide in.

What is your personal “motto”?

To be positive and present in the moment.

What advice would you give a woman wanting to follow her dreams?

Do not be afraid to fail, and never be afraid to ask for help where you need it.

Who or what is your inspiration and why?

I am inspired to make a difference, especially since becoming a mother. The future of our children and our planet desperately need to be safeguarded. In order to preserve the earth for future generations, we need to reduce the amount of harm that human activities have on the environment.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Not to take everything so seriously, not to sweat the small stuff. There is a time and place for everything.

Your favourite daily affirmation:

No amount of worrying can change the future.

Your favourite quote, relevant to the core of your business:

“They say sustainability and environmental preservation start at home. Anne Marie Bonneau said it best: “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”

Which book are you currently reading?

Unfortunately I am not reading anything at the moment, but the last book I read was ‘White Trash’ by Terry Angelos. A great read!

What are your top 3 business tips?

  1. Use your network wherever possible.
  2. Provide great service.
  3. Put a plan in place and stick to it.

What would you say is your secret to success?

I would like to think that I make very calculated decisions. I try to prepare (as far as possible) for all eventualities.

One piece of general advice that you’d like to share:

Don’t sit back and wait for the right time to make a change or a decision. Life is short and there will never be a perfect time.
